Elegant Stinkhorn
Mutinus elegans

I don’t think there is anything elegant about this fungus! It is similar to the other stinkhorns on this site: These fungi have an odor that is “nauseous to foetid” and can be detected from a couple yards away sometimes.

Flies are attracted to the order (big surprise!) and feed and walk all over the spore surface, helping to disseminate the sticky spores.

There’s not much to say about stinkhorns. The first time I ever spotted one (mutinus elegans), next to my compost pile, I was pretty shocked. I mean, LOOK AT THIS THING! Need I say more?

Oyster Mushroom

Not named because it tastes like an oyster, but because the shape and slipperiness slightly resembles that common bivalve.
