Dark Light
Tall Anemone Thimbleweed
Anemone virginiana

There’s something about flowers that are a greenish creamy white that I am attracted to, and it’s also something that I think makes them slightly harder to spot. Coming across this flower was a surprise and a find! I had never seen anything like it before.

In some ways this flower looks sort of like a larger version of the Little Leaf Buttercup (they are in the same Ranunculaceae family…)

It’s name comes from the fact that the center pistols loosely resemble a thimble shape.

Alternate Names: Tall Thimbleweed, Thimbleweed, Tall Anemone
Size: 12-31" tall
Family: Ranunculaceae (Buttercup Family)
Habitat: Forests, woodlands, meadows: moist or dry rich acid soils in sun or partial shade.
Identification: "This perennial’s erect, multiple stems, rising 2-3 ft., are topped by a greenish-white flower with a slightly elongated center resembling a short thimble. After frost, the thimble matures to a cottony tuft. Leaves are deeply cut and clustered in a whorl halfway up the stem." From wildflower.org Blooms May-July
